Since 1959, when the Danish American Society (DAS) was incorporated as a non-profit, non-political membership organization, it has pursued the goal of promoting friendship and understanding between the peoples of Denmark and the United States.
This objective has been served through the Society's involvement in a wide range of cultural, social and educational programs and events, expanding Danish-American ties in a shrinking world.
The Society also arranges and hosts regular social events throughout the year, from seasonal festivities to national or royal celebrations. On a lighter note, international sports events attract large groups of enthusiastic fans from its membership when Danish teams are involved, which members have entusiastically supported through numerous DAS sponsored events.
One of the most celebrated events in the history of the Society is the Person of the Year award. Started in 1975, the "Person of the Year" Award is given at an annual dinner dance to the person who has contributed meaningfully to the bonds between the United States and Denmark. The first person to receive the award was the beloved humorist Victor Borge. Over the years other worthy recipients have included TV newsman Walter Cronkite, ballet master Peter Martins, Danish artist Bjørn Winblad, global businessman Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller and Academy Award filmmaker Bille August.
